English Learner Program

What are ELAC Meetings?

 

To better assist the parents of English Learner students, the Eisenhower High School offers meetings every other month to provide information, assistance, and training on the EL Program so parents can better assist their children. We understand how important it is to include parents in all aspects of the educational journey - parents are the key to students' success. 

Meetings are referred to as ELAC Meetings, which means "English Learner Advisory Committee." Parents are strongly urged to attend meetings regularly to ensure receipt of key information provided at each meeting.

English Learner Program

Mission

Our mission is to provide all English Learners with access to core curriculum and development of academic language proficiency in order to reclassify and be college and career ready, in an environment that is culturally and linguistically sensitive to the community we serve.

 

The English Learner (EL) Program provides dedicated instruction and support to students who are learning English as a second language. Here are some other terms that EL is also referred to as:

  • ELD - English Language Development
  • EL - English Learner
  • ELL - English Language Learner
  • ESL - English as a Second Language

How does a student get enrolled in this program?

When parents complete the application form to admit their child, there is a question that asks what language is spoken at home. If a language other than English is selected, the student is then asked to take a language assessment (CELDT) to accurately determine how fluent the student speaks, reads, writes, and listens to English. Based on the results of this exam, it is then determined whether he/she is enrolled in the EL program or not.

 What type of services do EL students receive?

  • Students who score a level 1 or 2 on the CELDT test will be placed in ELD 1 and ELD 2 with an extra period of support. Students who score a level 3 will have a grade-level English class with an extra period of English support. Students who score 4 or 5 and are struggling in their classes may receive an additional support class that will help them with language acquisition and development.
  • Students whose EL levels are 1 or 2 are also enrolled in SEI (Sheltered English Immersion) classes for math, science and history. They also have access to three Bilingual Instructional Assistants to help with interpreting and understanding course work.
  • Lunchtime tutoring is offered every day for all EL students.
  • Every other month, ELAC (English Learner Advisory Committee) meetings for parents are held in in the morning to educate and support EL parents.
  • There is a designated counselor who works specifically with EL levels 1 and 2.
  • For ELs in regular classes, those teachers have received professional development on writing language objectives, differentiation, accountable talk, and SIOP, to meet the needs of our ELs.

 

How does a student exit out of the program?

To exit the program (otherwise known as "re-designating"), the student must accomplish all of the following:

  1. Pass the CELDT test with a 4 or 5.
  2. Pass classes with A, B or C grades.
  3. Pass the Study Sync Unit 1 or 2 assessments.
